Theme tasting flight:
A. 2000 Bouchard Puligny-Montrachet ‘Les Pucelles’ (5/5)
Apricot/peaches, notes of popcorn, leaner in palate and shows more wood, good minerals and lean length, asian pears and lime pith, better length then at first taste, still some burned caramel in the back

B. 2004 Pernot Bienvenues-Batard Montrachet (3/3)
Tropical, passion fruit and pineapple (canned version), almost like grapefruit caramel corn, showing some sulfur as it opens in palate, lazer-like acid though and some smokey minerals, persistant sulfur

C. 2002 michel nellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er ‘Clos de la Truffiere’ (6/6)
Candied lemon peel, tapioca/butterscotch pudding, cinnamon, weighty palate, pudding like mid palate, then gets tannic with zippy minerals, esters…not quite banana more like foster or butter rum, not intense enough v others here.

D. 2004 Vicent Giradin Puligny-Montrachet 1er ‘Les Combettes’ (1/1)
Sencha tea and vanilla, lemon pith, touch of greenish tobacco, smokey, vanilla-lime, almost teeth jarring acidity, seems kinda textbook for P-M, green tasting, Delicious!!

E. 2001 Vincent Giradin Bienvenues-Batard Montrachet (4/4)
Ripe but not without some acid, tropical palate, vanilla creme and grapefruit, lemon/lime pith with some bitterness, gets more and more acidic, graphite then some white peach later. woody but noble. powerful.

F. 2002 Laflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er ‘Les Foliatieres’ (2/2)
White truffle and polenta, lots of white pepper and popcorn, more truffles in palate, long length but then leans out to minerals in the mouth, waxy but leans out then some honeysuckle, saline and sea air, really well balanced

Pate…chopped meat, less vibrant but with some weight, floral in mid palate, drier tannins and a bit of wood tannins
Guessed: C-M

B. 2000 Clos de Lambrays (2/1)
Smoke and BBQ sauce, dark berry fruit and lots of coffee, almost like a dry version of Ramazotti amaro, spicy earth and brown spices, blood acid acid
Guessed: MsD

C. 1999 Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (1/2)
Slatey, almost flinty, lots of mushrooms…porcini, really pretty flowers…esp lavender, green tea leaves and rosehips, great meaty and violet midpalate, yum!
Guessed: C-M

D. 1998 Lignier-Michelot Morey St Denis 1er ‘Les Chenevery’ (5/4)
More tutti fruity, lots of orange acid in nose, truffles and earth (only one here showing truffles), fair bit of wet leaves and forest floor, getting lighter and more tannic as it opens, gets more citric and fiery on tongue

E. 2006 Jadot Chambolle-Musigny AOC (3/3)
Dark fruit, some wood spice but also coffee, cherry liquor and mace, Amaro/Campari tastes, almost tastes italian, but really quite tasty despite showing youth

F. 2002 Ghislain Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er les Chatelots (4/5)
Bit more mushroomy, raspberry and mint/rosemary, sencha tea, great leathery midpalate, seems younger but good mid palate intensity, just not the class of B and C

Northern Rhone…Mixed (March 2009)

Theme Tasting: Mixed Northern Rhone

A. 1995 Thierry Allemand Cornas ‘Le Chaillot’ (1/1)
White pepper and orange pekoe tea, ashy smoke, pepperoni and kumquat jam, dusty raspberries, big tannins and smoked cooking herbs, kinda everything I want from up north. Delicious!!
Guessed: Hermitage

B. 1986 Gaillard Cote Rotie ‘Cote Blonde et Brune’ (5/5)
Thinking this is mildly corked, or at least dumbed down, lean mid-palate, lots of oranges and gunpowder tea, underripe raspberries, almost barolo-esque ashy notes

C. 2000 Thierry Allemand Cornas ‘Sans Soufre’ (2/2)
Blueberries and cigar tobacco, sweet pipe smoke, beautiful floral bouquet esp with violets, green olives, almost charred meat and basl notes, kinda delicious and wild.
Guessed: Cote Rotie

D. 1999 Jamet Cote Rotie (4/4)
Jasmin flowers, violets and freeze-dried blueberries, fruity pebbles with coffee, viognier lift to the palate

E. 1989 Patrick Jasmin Cote Rotie (6/6)
brighter red fruit than others, orange peel with pith, really high toned acid almost kumquat tartness, tarts lean and thinner than the others, minerally though

F. 1999 Jaboulet Aine Hermitage ‘La Chapelle’ (3/3) (mine)
Ash, leather, violets, more mushrooms and dirt, mint, rosemary, gardenias, older wine…seems like its the oldest here, lots of black olives and plums, not a huge fan of the nose but love the palate.

Theme Tasting: Bandol w/ tapenade, smoked tenderloin, french lentils and mushroom/pepper ragout

A. 1999 Jean-Pierre Gausen Bandol (2/1)
Gamey, and gaining more intensity immediately, lots of red cherry and raspberry, gets more chocolatey…chocolate cherries, mineral and herbs, lovely and complex, a bit ripe but delicious.

B. 1995 Bastide Blanche Cuvee Fontaineau Bandol (1/2)
More smoke and olive initially, then some baked blackberries, Smells like Bandol! roasted cherries and pepperoni. muted celery, inidian spices esp cardamon, dusty herb salt. F-ing delicious!

C. 1993 Dom. Tempier La Tourtine Bandol (5/5)
Dark chocolate and juniper, getting more poopy, lots of tart herbs, almost bourbon in the nose, red cherry confection, almost luden’s cough drop cherry, getting more savory then sweet again

D. 2004 Chat. Pradeaux Bandol (4/4)
Lots of green herbs, seems like huge mourvedre tannins here, almost 100% cocoa notes, meaty but tastes like a young wine, ripe/raisin, improves as it leans out, blue fruits especially.
Guessed this was the Pradeaux.

E. 1999 Chat. La Rouviere Bandol (6/6)
Dense herbs and currants, southern rhone band-aidy,getting more and more herbal and green olive, cherry cola, sharp and bitey, also seems young.

F. 2000 Dom. Tempier La Tourtine Bandol (3/3)
Duck poop and cherries, minty herbs, lots of tarragon, menthol and bong water, gets more cocoa with food, showing some alcohol aka medicinal

A. 1995 Dom. d’Arlot V-R 1er Les Suchots (1/1)
Smokey, some hot alcohol, bright rasp, gets more and more pretty as it fleshes out, gains in weight and intensity with time, lots of smokey roses

B. 1996 Dom. Leroy V-R 1er Les Beaux Monts (6/6)
Darker and brooding, incredibly rich rasp/pepperoni, getting more ashy, leaner in mouth and thinner mouthfeel than expected, high acid but just ashy all the way through

C. 1997 Dom. Drouhin V-R 1er Les Petits Monts (4/4)
Higher toned, more leafy, orange pekoe tea, incredibly gobby fruit, spicy but showing a bit of alcohol

D. 1993 Dom. Rion V-R AOC (3/3)
Rasp tea, gaining in smokey pekoe/gunpowder tea, rich almost jammy, but elements of band-aid, tomato, a bit like a chat de pape?

E. 2002 Hudelot-Noellat V-R 1er Les Malconsorts (5/5)
More earthy and leafy, then coffee notes here, thinner than expected by nose, a pretty dramatic water-line, a more watery

F. 2002 Hudelot-Noellat V-R 1er Les Malconsorts (2/2)
Tannic yet brighter than others, pretty, really floral, esp roses and hibiscus, then coffee as an undertone

Lighter, more bricked, kumquats, more coffee in mouth, slightly sweet, briney, light rosehips, tarragon later

B. 1988 Dom. Giroud Corton (2/1)
Cleaner and brighter, cherry nose, darker hued, some meatiness, bright orange orange and lemon peel in mouth, spicy herbs and cooking spices, lingering citrus acid

C. 2002 Price Florent de Merode Corton (5/6)
Highertoned red fruit, some alcohol, a little poo and a little pepperoni, more flabby in the mouth, grassy in nose, some sulfur meatiness in mouth, jarring acid

D. 1993 Beaux-Freres (3/5)
Back to more chocolate, brooding, brighter cherry in mouth, cocoa powder and some braesola meatiness, gains in orange and almost pineapple acid, green beans?

E. 2001 Chandon de Brailles Corton Les Bressandes (6/2)
Caramelized orange blossoms, beef stick and cherry cough drops, weird orange?, big acid but herby character, back to tarragon again

F. 1996 Bouchard Le Corton (1/3)
More galore of everything, esp cherries, indian spices, big tannins, most young tasting and tight now, really lingering acid, cinnamon hots, red leaf lettuce

2. 2004 Las Madres Syrah: pretty terrible, almost late harvest
